Add
an 1804 "dollar" to your collection for less than $4.14 million
(which is what the Proof-68 Childs specimen cost its new owner in
1999). This is an 1804-L (JP) 8-Reales ("piece of eight")
minted in Lima, Peru (KM#97), grading PCGS AU-58. It was legal tender in the US until
1857. The obverse of this example displays attractive original toning
with hints of rose and green iridescence, slightly darker around the
peripheries and lighter in the center. The reverse is a lighter
antique gray with some orange and green iridescence. Both sides are
much nicer than my scans. There is only very slight evidence of
circulation, and the luster is excellent. Price: $500.
