1818/5
capped bust quarter, PCGS MS-64.
B-1, Rarity-2. The top of a
"5" is visible in the upper loop of the final "8" in the
date. Lustrous silver gray at the centers, fading to rich blue at the
rims, with a hint of rose. Very well struck for a coin from this
era. Simply fabulous eye appeal. Struck
from clashed dies. Another example of this coin, graded MS-64 (but not
certified), sold for $18,700 in the April 1997 sale of the Eliasberg
collection. PCGS has graded a total of only 38 examples of this date,
five of which are in higher grades, though it would be hard to imagine that
any are prettier. Price: $5,950.
