| Bob
Shippee (on the right) is the founder and president of Rarecoinman, Ltd., a small
firm with a little-visited website that may someday be interesting.
He began collecting coins in 1956, filling, with some success, as many
holes in the cent, nickel, dime, and quarter blue Whitman folders as he could
from circulation. His best find was
a 1914-D cent in Very Good condition, but with a nasty "A" scratched
in the right obverse field by some knucklehead.
He also was able to pluck a couple of dozen Morgan dollars from
“circulation” by exchanging his paper route earnings for cartwheels at the
Cos Cob branch of the Connecticut Bank and Trust Company.

| Bob is an active collector of United States pattern coins, having bought
his first example, a copper version of the 1873 Pickle Puss Trade Dollar,
Judd-1283, in March 1996. His thrill at having acquired such a rare coin, with fewer
than 10 specimens known to exist, for only $3,400 led him to delve more deeply
into this curious and fascinating field. One
day he may finish his book on US patterns, provisionally entitled Not Quite
Money.
Bob is married and has
two kids and a dog. None of his
other family members, with the exception of Pepper (on the left) who listens to
all his stories with rapt attention, has any interest in coins whatsoever.
When not buying, selling, studying, or writing about coins, Bob spends
his time playing golf and imagining himself as a gentleman farmer. He is a
retired Managing Director of J.P. Morgan Chase and Company.
Bob's 30 years at "Chase" gave him and his family the
opportunity to live in Hong Kong, Tokyo, and London, and afforded him the means
to satisfy some of his numismatic desires. [November 5, 2001,
update: Bob is now an un-retired Managing Director of Bank of America,
having received an offer he couldn't refuse. That pattern book
will just have to wait...]
Bob is a Life Member of the American
Numismatic Association and a Life Associate of the American
Numismatic Society. Pepper is a graduate of Adopt-a-Dog, with an
advanced degree in squirrel chasing.
