Half Eagle, PCGS AU-55. Here is the perfect type coin to represent
the Indian Head Half Eagle in your collection. The 1909-O has the
lowest mintage (34,200) in this highly collectible series (24 dates and
mintmarks). In addition, its price escalates steeply beyond the choice
AU level, to over $5,000 in MS-60 and to an eye-popping $35,000 in MS-63
(per the June 2001 Coin Dealer Newsletter).
Only seven examples of the 1909-O Half Eagle appeared in major public
auctions last year. One of these was an uncertified AU-55,
which sold for $3,163 in Bowers & Merena's June 2000 sale, Lot
